The exhibition title of Team STUDIO 1750, <MARINE SNOW>, is paradoxical. The title first thrills us with a sense of mystery and fantasy. Snow falling on the deep sea, which has remained unknown for a long time, is enough to stimulate our emotions with the feeling of its name. As if to live up to such expectations, the installation invites us to a world of fantasy with colors and movements that touch emotions. And the work format also stimulates the imagination by mixing and connecting disparate materials as if playing. However, behind such pleasant play, there is a concern about human touch and gaze on nature. It is a critical mind about the ecology and the environment, which is becoming unknown as it is driven by human desire.

The reality of snow falling in the deep sea is the corpses or excrement of creatures that died on the surface of the sea. In other words, it refers to organic matter in granular form, which is the remains of dead bodies that have been decomposed and dissolved by microorganisms. For those of us who couldn't imagine a world where huge whales fall down to mere dust, sea eyes turn light excitement into the weight of darkness and silence. However, the focus of STUDIO 1750 is not on such death. Dead organisms will decompose and disintegrate into small particles. This is because such sea eyes will be reborn as a cycle of ecology by becoming food for seafloor creatures. Their work is directed toward a critical mind about disturbing the ecosystem by going against the time of nature. It is not only sea eyes that have been found in the deep sea, but also trash that is as tough as human desire, and there is an unknown world that will unfold because of them.

Whether transparent and tough plastic grains fall like sea snow and circulate through the ecosystem, or accumulate in the depths of the sea, the fear of unknown is no different from that of death. STUDIO 1750 expresses a world where even life can turn into death, a world created by desire, with material properties. The union of heterogeneous things is a double-edged sword. It can enrich our lives and lead us toward the path of creation, but the unknown world created by hybridity sometimes comes with fear. The symbolism of the sea means a space where life is reborn, and it also means a space where one is swallowed up by endless desire. However, the deep sea where plastic grains fall like snow can no longer be a space for life. The title is a keyword that speaks of the existence of another world on the other side of the world that stimulates our emotions. The corpse of living things will permeate the ecosystem into the circle of circulation through the process of decay and dissolution. However, the garbage found along with the snow on the seabed is the remnants of the needs of life and the desire to go beyond those needs. It is something invisible or a being that has already deeply entered our daily lives and dominated our lives while we do not clearly recognize the reality of its existence.

Desire that spreads through materiality

The large-scale installation <1=10> (cloth, blower, 170X170X470(H)cm, 2020) with a height of nearly 5 meters makes us imagine Kafka's Gregory Samja transformed into a giant insect. When the wind blows through the installed blower and inflates, the work reveals its complete form. And if wind is not blown into it, the sense of volume disappears and the creature slowly inflates and disappears as if breathing. The red surface of the work, split like tentacles, is greasy like an inflated desire.

STUDIO 1750 utilizes plastic as a material to reveal the variability of plastic in their works. They create works by transforming a flat surface into a three-dimensional shape using waterproof fabric with plastic added to the fabric. This method becomes an element that enables the work to be done without being greatly restricted in size and shape in making large-scale three-dimensional works. <1 = 10>, <Sound Sponge> (cloth, birch, speaker, blower, 180X180X160cm, 2020), and <Pocket with Yellow Protrusions> (cloth, birch, blower, 155X155X250, 2020) are sewn on waterproof fabric. It is a work that is expressed in three dimensions by blowing wind. Also, by adjusting the condition of the air blown in like <1 = 10>, the work expresses movement while returning to a three-dimensional state with a solid sense of form and no volume.

Unlike <1=10>, <LMO 3116> (mixed media, variable installation, 2016~) uses a thin plastic material rather than a waterproof cloth. STUDIO 1750 uses waterproof cloth, PET bottles, and plywood as materials for its installation works, and plastic is the main material except for structures in the form of supports or pedestals. And these materials are closely related to the theme of the work, ecology and hybridity. Plastic is light, tough, and can be changed to any shape or color you desire. And it is a convenient material that can be used for a long time. It is the crystallization of human desire. The waterproof fabric, which has the impermeability of plastic added to the fabric, becomes a material that has the flexibility to be cut into various shapes and yet has the hardness that nothing can escape. This imperviousness is suitable for expressing the world of separation and alienation that exists by blocking and excluding others. Plastics can be formed into any shape. Any complex lump shape can be created in the form of a thin film that makes it difficult to feel the presence. In addition to the formative power, plastic seems to give out everything transparently and harmonize with other materials. Its transparency seems to capture the surrounding world without distortion. However, plastic is fundamentally a material with blocking and rejecting properties. Whether plastic is a treated cloth, a plastic ball, or a thin-film stick, it means a refusal to come in and out, a refusal to communicate. Therefore, STUDIO 1750 not only does not emit what belongs to it, but also reveals the existence of the work through physical properties that prevent anything from permeating. Their theme consciousness is already being realized from the physical properties of materials.

Unlike the works <1=10> and <LMO 3116>, which are filled and emptied by the operation of a blower, <Sound Sponge> and <Bag with Yellow Protrusions> are installed while maintaining a certain shape. It is also because the properties of plastic are used to support the shape with materials that do not have volume. Plastic blocks the gaps inherent in the fabric without revealing its existence. As a result, the installation works form a solid entity with the air sucked in through the blower. The works become a existence that is maintained only by inhaling devices and blocking outflow. There is an image of accumulated capital that is maintained by constantly stimulating desire and encouraging consumption. It is a picture of a world that is becoming larger due to consumption that the ecological environment cannot handle and desire that cannot interact with the ecosystem.

Capitalist society is sustained by producing desires that exceed survival. In the works of STUDIO 1750, materiality is not irrelevant to these themes. The installation works draw our attention with sweet colors, various forms, and sensory stimulation by adding movement and sound. Like the products filling the showcase, some works come with a soft and sweet image. The exhibition is like a play yard, and various things to see unfold. And it reminds me of the illusion created by capital.

empty beings

The installation work of STUDIO 1750 is a story about what does not exist and what exists. Wood and plastic balls are sometimes used, but the work is an empty object filled with invisible air. It is a work that exists as a shell, that is, as a surface. It is like a world of images floating around only as symbols without a target to refer to. The tough or hard material that encloses the inner contents of an object is called a shell or shell. In this way, the work consisting only of shells, shells, and epidermis shows the imaged world in a tangible way. Debord's spectacle, accumulated capital that has become an image, is a representation and false consciousness that conceals the content of life. It is “to assert that all human life is mere appearance and declare the domination of appearance”. What sustains it is nothing but invisible desire. STUDIO 1750 shows the false consciousness that dominates our lives through the physical properties of materials and in a tangible way. The work refers to a world of images, a world of spectacle, and a world in which nothing can be captured if peeled off.

There is nothing concrete behind the shell. The hard shell divides and separates existence and nonexistence, inside and outside, content and form, and only refers to the boundary of exclusion. Works made of shells show the true nature of a world that exists only with shells, a commodity society. The fictitiousness of the commodity society, where the wrapping paper is more important than the content, makes the content and relationship disappear behind the spectacle. It constantly stirs up desire, but what you hold in your hands is a shell that is only an illusion. However, in this society where we have to listen to the story of a child who sold his organs to get an iPhone, that shell is recognized as a more solid entity than anything else. In this way, at the point where STUDIO 1750's critical mind on ecology and materiality are connected, we encounter life and head toward the invisible structure of the capitalist system.

For STUDIO 1750, the shell is not just a superficial story. It is connected to the life of the writer. Jinhee Son, a member of STUDIO 1750, went to a design company before studying abroad and experiences a time when the wrapping paper was more important than the contents. This experience became an important factor in the composition of STUDIO 1750's works. Wrapping paper is a world that exists only with images. The wrapping paper that wraps the product is the false world and object of contemplation that Guy Debord refers to. A society where signs proliferate is not a world of life that is created traversing a network of relationships. This is because capital's interest is not in the content of life. Capital grows in size by producing and consuming images. But it is just an empty existence without content. The fantasy that STUDIO 1750 shows through the work is paradox and wit placed in the place where the contents of life are cut out. The work of STUDIO 1750 is a story drawn from life like this.

Mixture is the keyword that STUDIO 1750 understands today's life and the way it realizes its work. The work is combined in the form of a wooden pedestal with a three-dimensional body made using waterproof fabric, or in the case of <Ping Pong Tree> (urethane vinyl, birch, PVC 300X300X320(H)cm, 2020), birch plywood and plastic) in the form of a plastic and wooden support. It is the added form of the structure of In other words, it is a combination of man-made and natural. The same goes for materials. Tarpaulin is a hybrid of plastic and cloth. Plastics are polymeric composites. And the works created by STUDIO 1750 can be their imagination of hybrids of plastic and sea creatures. A society conditioned to sprint for the accumulation of capital and the world of its accumulation are alienated and separated. Mixture for the purpose of capital sometimes acts as a distorted barrier to communication rather than overcoming isolation and separation. Objects made from hybrids without thinking about the relationship between nature and ecology threaten life, and sometimes face the collapse of life behind what is piled up to support life. The world seen by STUDIO 1750 is a world of hybridity, swollen as the minimum need to maintain life turns into desire and then into greed.

Insignificance, that light story that is not light

Plastic is a material so common that we do not even recognize its existence. It is a synthetic material that can be changed into various shapes so easily to fit our expectations. It is hard and light, flexible and tough. It seems to be infinitely transparent, but it is a dream material with the property of blocking anything from penetrating. However, it is also a trivial thing that is easily discarded as quickly and easily as it is created. However, cracks in daily life occur due to what we have been with that triviality and lightness. The works of STUDIO 1750 stand on the border between sweet and bitter. The play of the senses they engage in is both light and serious by arranging three-dimensional figures that are empty on elaborately crafted pedestals and supports. At the boundary between play and non-play, they say: “Microplastics are falling like snow in the deep sea, an unknown world that is more unknown than the surface of the moon.”

Instead of a world where sea snow does not fall, a world where fine plastic snow falls. A world that rejects the cycle and change of the ecosystem is a world far from fantasy and romance. The place where the remnants of our lives and the traces of undying desire return to the land where we live after passing through the sea. From there, the not light story of STUDIO 1750 begins. Their work calls us to the world of imagination to meet a life that cannot be abandoned as insignificant.
