섬세한 표현과 묵직함, 때론 깊이가 다른 경쾌함을 자연과 사물이 가진 고유의 빛깔로 풀어내는 김종원 작가의 전시에 거는 기대는 언제나 즐겁다. 현대회화의 기법을 최대한 적용하면서도 그 절제된 느낌은 색채에 얽매이지 않은 독창적 감성을 담고 있기 때문이다. 작가의 손과 감각에 익숙한 테크닉이 총동원되었지만 작가가 즐기고 있는 자유로움이 작품에서 고스란히 드러나기에 내가 작가의 작품에 경이로움을 표하는 이유이기도 하다.
올 굵은 마띠에르 위에 올려진 바이올린과 나뭇잎, 작품의 배경으로 펼쳐진 인체에서는 온통 공명음이 들리는 것만 같다. 작품 <채석강>과 <비내섬>, <겨울바다>에 담긴 수채화에서는 공기와 바람이 투과되는 흐름 속으로 완전히 빠져 들게 되고, 무게감이 돋보이는 깊이와 억지로 드러내지 않아도 자연스레 스며드는 숨결 같은 부드러움은 전율을 일으키기에 충분하다. 그렇기에 작가의 작품을 스쳐 지났다가도 다시 돌아와 그림 앞에 서게 하는 묘한 중독성을 지녔음이 분명하다. 성숙한 녹색과 흰색이 그려내는 겨울의 따스함이 좋다. <자작나무>에서 충분히 보여 주었지만 작품에서 들리는 피아노 소리는 나에게만 들리는 것은 아닐 터. 여름으로 가는 봄과 가을로 가는 여름처럼 어디서 시작했는지는 모르나 끊임없이 연결되는 고리의 끈을 발견하는 것도 행복한 일이다.
