“PAINTING is PAIN”

I didn't have my own way from the beginning
As I go, how does it become my path?
- Jang Ki-ha and the Faces 5th album title track <That's Your Idea>

Walking on a road I didn’t even know existed, pretending that it was my mission, pretending that the weaving of Eoyoung and Booyoung was in a different context, putting it in as I found it and pretending that the depth was far away… If you live your life adding, inflating, and packaging every nook and cranny, there is nothing wrong with swearing at nitrogen snacks. Successful Sajoks are called 'Shinhwa', and those who fail are called 'Pung'. Dramatic anecdotes, extraordinary inspirations, stunning work... With obvious expectations, Kim Eul-eun replied with a phrase embedded somewhere in his book.

“What I drew is correct, but… I don't remember. I'll have an espresso or something.”

go the way With a pair of lies, no myths, no nakedness. Intent, necessity, politics, calculation, collusion? Know Mijoo, be honest no matter what anyone says. Honest naked. He is Kim, and that is drawing.

The status of 'work rehearsal', 'process', 'esquis', and drawing was like that for a while.
I tried it for a test, and there are cases where it is unexpectedly cool. The shoes I bought with the intention of throwing them away, the nickname I fired at in anger, the hastily scribbled letters. There is something that doesn't come out when you walk your arms and hold each other. I drew it for practice, but what if it's better than the main subject? Then that's the point. Drawing is so liberating. It was recognized for another charm and context that only sticks out when one loosens one's posture, relaxes, and resolves. The fish flesh, which was soothed at the tip of the tongue by scooping a couple of pieces with the tip of a knife on the waving deck, is finally on the table with the name 'live fish'. So, first of all, Kim Eul's drawings are 'fresh and raw'. It is before hardening. I didn't even do the packaging. There is no time to lie. This attitude he calls 'honesty' or 'honesty'.

Is it drawing by drawing lines with dry materials on white paper? Letters, sculptures, moving rides, tattered and torn canvases... There is no set form for him, no box that fits perfectly. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and other frames do not fit anywhere, so they cannot be forced into them. he says “Image/text/three-dimensional/flat? It’s all just a means, obsessing over a certain way of speaking is stupid.”
Is it a master of decades of experience to draw a pretty and cool line? Crooked handwriting “I am a painter who is really bad at drawing”. These are the words in one of his drawings. A good drawing? Drawing is 'not subject to any frame', but it is 'drawing with standards and flattering standards'. Is it like 'hot iced coffee'? I fall in love with the ability to break things that have been piled up rather than the skill of building them up beautifully. The old potter, who was happy at dawn while examining the crispy pottery, took it all out and hammered it in the middle of the night. seems to have changed his mind. Always think new. break the mold break the inertia. hammer the work. That is Kim Eul's drawing.
The attributes of drawing, such as 'preliminary', 'experimental', and 'postponed', originally always came into contact with 'assistance', 'process', and 'unfinished'. Rather, they do not cross their arms in any form or frame of thought, and repeatedly engage in 'push and hold' and 'management of the fishing grounds'. Mysteriously, only then do they become self-reliant with an eternal 'something'. It is the reason why he wants to be free every day in terms of attitude, form, and content.

A white canvas imprisoned in a black iron grate. “It’s unfortunate. It's just a 'white lie'.” The crooked posture, as if complaining, is quite sly, but the context somehow bites the bone. A painting in prison? There is no sanctuary in Crime and Punishment. Pinocchio, the art of shepherds who lie and undermine conscience and innocence, is 〈Jail〉, and is bound for prison.

A cabin rising in the middle of the exhibition hall, 〈Twilight Zone Studio〉. it's his studio More than fifty 'hammers that break the frame' filled one wall. It is the representative icon of this exhibition, but it seems that he will have to live for a long time to use it all.

〈Drawing Machine〉 looks like it would fit in an arcade. Every time the audience presses the pedal vigorously, it goes wild! draw on paper A doll peeks through the small window on the side of Kim, a worker who is renovating. Next, hit a wooden mallet and stamp a stamp the size of your palm. drawing complete. However, the atmosphere of the playground and the exciting feeling of hitting are not everything. The words “Drawing is Hammering” are embedded along the silhouette of Kim Eul’s head. Drawing without drawing, hammering (breaking) on white paper (old frame) is also drawing. 'You don't have to draw it', 'You're breaking stereotypes'. Experience the meaning and scope of drawing. To 'break' the old frame of thought. 'Hammer that ruins the frame'. That is Kim Eul's drawing.

Not only that. 'Gimeul' lurks everywhere in the exhibition hall. Men appear in the heads of wooden horses and carts, the faces of dolls, paintings and sculptures. A bald head and a smile that catches the eye. Two lines of wrinkles at the corners of the mouth, showing both leisure and self-confidence. Sometimes dainty and cute, sometimes as an angry artist who stabs his brush fiercely as if he were using an old spear with Jo Ja-ryong. It is the alter ego of Kim Eul that does not require additional acting.
'Serious vs humorous' balance game. This balance, skillfully blending the two, is the main rhythm that runs through his entire work. Each piece, the composition of each section, and the entire exhibition appear repeatedly like fractals. The skull screws attached to the cute wagon draw attention. A hammer and a prison form a strange contrast to toys. A noisy playground coexists with a wall on which a year's worth of contemplation is quietly laid out.

Tightrope walking is a simple play, Kim Eul's way of speaking, and also a window for the audience to immerse themselves. “Yeah. Just kidding - oh. When you don't like drawing. If you drag this guy 1, it will draw a picture. Haha-“ Even if you hold on to it and ask, the explanation of his work is usually within one line. The rest is replaced by warm companionship with the work. cute and fierce crowded and desolate dazed Hide confidently. Innocent and obsessive It's coldly cozy. The day of prostration is also solemn. I rode the rhythm with my eyes, and suddenly I was splashing! I come to my senses belatedly as I step out of the imaginary puddle. The drumbeats of Kim Eul's great epic are 'Rock Up', 'Roller Coaster', and 'Il Hee Il Bi'. A heavy, serious, or just kitsch and mischievous attitude all the time ends up being stiff and monotonous. It doesn't last long.

“Painting this bastard”
The writings that appear throughout the work are unusual. Is it only The person throwing the painting, the painting flying down the wall and falling down, the bloody eye contest with the painting, the canvas that was drawn and torn after finishing it well… He is harsh and savage when it comes to his paintings. It's cold rice in the blatant poor hospitality. 'Are you angry?' want.
“Use the work as a hammer,” I introduced Kim Eul’s drawing earlier. To him, the work is neither a shrine nor a ten-fingered child. It is an old hammer that I use and throw away, and then find it again. It's enough if you use it to your heart's content. There is no reason to be anxious and thirsty with cherished things. Valuable and useful are different. Drawing is a tool. It is a tool. It is a by-product. It's definitely 'my picture is correct, but I can't remember it'.

“PAINTING IS PAIN”
It is understandable why it is a drawing. 'Think deeply, draw roughly'. The goal is to hold onto the ankle, and if you obsess, you will be buried. because it's painful A bright red warning message “Beware of Art” is hung in the middle of the studio. The attitude of keeping a safe distance by embracing the painting for half of the day and going in and out for the other half is really drawing-like.
