이번 전시 《평범의 세계: 이로운 공예》를 준비하면서 ‘평범’이라는 단어를 수없이 생각했습니다. ‘평범, 색다른 점이 없이 보통이다.’라는 뜻을 내포한 이 단어를 접할 때, 때로는 다소 부정적인 느낌으로 다가올 때가 있습니다. 아마도 특별하지 않다는 의미 때문이겠죠. 실제로 작품을 감상하며 평범한 것을 찾는 사람들은 아무도 없습니다만, 저희는 이번 전시를 통해 공예가 가진 가장 큰 특성인 ‘노동’, ‘다수(多數)’, 그리고 ‘쓰임’이라는 점을 생각하며 다시 한 번 ‘평범’이라는 말을 되짚어 보았습니다.
공예가들은 본인이 선택한 재료를 충분히 음미하며, 꾸준히 일을 합니다. 쓰임을 고려한 기물을 만들고, 더 나은 작품을 만들기 위해 노력을 더해갑니다. 많은 양을 만들고, 작가의 기량 또한 궤도에 올라 부족함이 없는 기물을 만듭니다. 단 하나의 걸작을 만들기 위해 노력하는 현대미술의 예술가들과는 다른 점이지요.
이렇듯 공예가 만드는 ‘평범’은 우리가 흔히 사용하는 단어의 뜻보다는 더 많은 것을 내포하고 있습니다. 그 안에는 노동, 노력, 시간, 그들의 고민, 그리고 사용자를 생각하는 마음이 담겨 있습니다. 저희는 공예가 가진 ‘평범’이라는 의미를 깊이 있게 보여주고자 국내외에서 활발하게 작품 활동을 선보이는 20명의 공예가들과 함께 〈1부-가장 고요한 움직임〉, 〈2부-친숙한 사물〉, 〈3부-공예의 풍경〉이라는 세 가지 파트로 나누어 구성하였습니다.
전시를 맞이하는 〈1부 가장 고요한 움직임〉은 작가의 행위에 집중하여 오랜 세월 축적된 작가들의 소리 없는 노력과 고민의 흔적을 보여주는 공간으로, 오로지 재료와 손끝에 기대어 작업을 하는 여섯 명의 작가들이 긴 시간을 몰두하여 완성한 작품들을 보여드리고자 합니다.
2부에서는 우리 삶과 밀접한 ‘친숙한 사물’로써, 공예가 가진 ‘용도’에 대해 이야기하려고 합니다. 우리가 일상생활 속 마주하는 가구, 도자기, 유리 등 쓰임이 있는 공예 작품을 전시하며, 매일 쓰는 것에서 새로운 미감을 발견할 수 있는 공간으로 선보입니다.
마지막 〈3부 공예의 풍경〉은 다양한 공예 작품이 한데 모여 어우러지는 하나의 풍경을 제시합니다. 오랜 세월 많은 사람들이 함께 쌓아 올린 지혜의 산물인 전통공예와 자신만의 기법을 탐구해온 현대공예가들의 작품을 통해 동시대 삶의 모습을 반영하는 공예, 과거에서 현재 그리고 미래로 향하는 공예의 의미와 역할을 사유할 수 있는 시간이 되길 바랍니다.
‘쓰임’을 가진 공예는 사용자의 눈길과 손길이 닿았을 때, 비로소 완성이 됩니다. 새로운 쓰임을 찾아 ‘누림’이 확장될 때 예측할 수 없는 새로운 세계가 펼쳐지는 것은 아닐까요? 이 전시를 통해 만드는 자, 바라보는 자, 사용하는 자가 서로를 알아보고 각자의 취향에 맞는 쓰임을 찾아 공예가들의 작품이 일상 속 ‘이로운 보통의 것’이 되는 ‘평범의 세계’로의 첫 걸음이 되었으면 합니다.

While preparing for this exhibition 《A World of Ordinary: Beneficial Crafts》, I thought of the word 'ordinary' countless times. When you encounter this word, which means 'ordinary, normal without anything unusual', sometimes it comes with a rather negative feeling. Maybe because it means it's not special. No one actually looks for something ordinary while appreciating the work, but through this exhibition, we once again think about the biggest characteristics of craft: 'labor', 'many', and 'use'. I looked back at the word 'normal'.
Craftsmen fully appreciate the materials they choose and work steadily. We make objects considering their use and put more effort into creating better works. A large amount is made, and the artist's skills are also on track to create objects that are not lacking. It is different from the artists of contemporary art who strive to create just one masterpiece.
As such, the 'ordinary' created by craft implies more than the meaning of the words we commonly use. It contains labor, effort, time, their concerns, and the mind of thinking about users. In order to show the meaning of 'ordinary' in depth in crafts, we, together with 20 craftsmen who are actively presenting their works at home and abroad, 〈Part 1 - The Most Silent Movement〉, 〈Part 2 - Familiar Objects〉, 〈Part 3 It is composed of three parts: Landscape of Crafts.
〈Part 1, The Most Silent Movement〉, which welcomes the exhibition, is a space that shows the traces of the artists' silent efforts and worries accumulated over a long period of time by focusing on the artist's actions. I would like to show you the works that I have devoted my time to.
In Part 2, I would like to talk about the 'use' of craft as a 'familiar object' closely related to our lives. We display craftworks that have uses, such as furniture, ceramics, and glass, that we encounter in our daily lives, and present them as a space where you can discover a new sense of beauty in everyday use.
The last part, 〈Part 3 Craft Scenery〉, presents a landscape where various craft works come together and harmonize. Through the works of modern craftsmen who have explored their own techniques and traditional crafts, which are the products of wisdom accumulated by many people over a long period of time, the meaning and role of crafts that reflect contemporary life and move from the past to the present and the future. I hope it will be a time to reason.
Crafts with 'use' are only completed when the user's eyes and hands touch them. When 'enjoyment' expands in search of a new use, wouldn't a new, unpredictable world unfold? Through this exhibition, I hope that the creator, the viewer, and the user will recognize each other and find a use that suits their taste, and that the works of craftsmen will be the first step toward a 'world of ordinary' where the works of craftsmen become 'useful ordinary things' in everyday life.
