Dior Lady Art #9: A Global Ode to Craft, Culture, and Reinvention

Eleven international artists transform the Lady Dior bag into collectible masterpieces on view at Dior’s Vancouver boutique

Each year, the House of Dior transcends the boundaries of fashion with Dior Lady Art, a project that invites leading artists from around the world to reinterpret the iconic Lady Dior handbag as a sculptural canvas. Now in its ninth edition, Lady Art #9 is more than a creative collaboration—it is a cultural phenomenon, uniting artistic expression, heritage, and haute couture craftsmanship in an unfiltered dialogue across borders and disciplines.

Conceived in 2016, Dior Lady Art reimagines the elegant architecture of the Lady Dior—a handbag defined by its clean lines and signature cannage stitching—as a platform for visual storytelling. For this ninth iteration, Dior has invited eleven visionary artists to imbue the bag with their own cultural, personal, and political narratives. Their works transform the bag into a poetic object, balancing the Maison’s storied history with radical contemporary vision.

Among the artists is Vaughn Spann, a New Jersey-based painter who fuses abstraction and figuration to explore themes of Black identity and American history. Spann’s take on the Lady Dior features transparent pinks, geometric motifs, and his signature “X” mark, invoking presence, absence, and the resilience of personal symbolism.

Beijing artist Liang Yuanwei infuses her Lady Dior with Chinese historical references, drawing on Song dynasty porcelain patterns. Her 3D-printed resin florals—finished with antique gold and jade-green details—create a tactile echo of ancient ceramic beauty reborn as wearable art.

Duy Anh Nhan Duc, a Vietnamese-born botanical artist now based in Paris, renders his bag from vegan leather and adorns it with embossed flora, gold vines, and a preserved dandelion encased in resin. The result is a fragile yet enduring meditation on nature and time.

Canadian-born Anna Weyant bridges old master technique with surreal femininity. Her Lady Dior designs showcase golden blooms and wood-grain textures, channeling the melancholic shadowplay that defines her figurative work.

Jeffrey Gibson, of Choctaw and Cherokee descent, brings a potent mixture of Indigenous craft and pop culture to his beaded, slogan-covered Lady Dior. Featuring 3D-printed heart-shaped padlocks, Gibson’s design alludes to the locks of love on Parisian bridges—symbolic of both unity and resistance.

Danielle McKinney, an Alabama-born painter known for introspective female portraits, contributes a Lady Dior that evokes domestic dreamscapes. Her hand-embroidered figures and butterflies convey the quiet strength and intimacy of her paintings.

Turkish-American artist Hayal Pozanti introduces a language of abstraction shaped by technology and mythology. Her trekking-themed bags integrate sheepskin, rhinestones, mirrored interiors, and climbing elements—merging adventure with fantasy in dazzling complexity.

Sara Flores of the Peruvian Amazon invokes Shipibo-Conibo textile traditions, transforming spiritual geometry into hypnotic beaded constellations. Her bags shimmer with silver accents and honor the Kené visual language—a system of symbolic patterning rooted in ancestral healing practices.

From South Korea, Woo Kukwon presents deeply personal creations inspired by his family. His whimsical Lady Dior bags feature embroidered portraits of his wife, daughter, and dog, embellished with cherry blossoms and vibrant threads in a fusion of pop surrealism and Korean sentimentality.

Faith Ringgold, a towering figure in American feminist and civil rights art, left behind six final Lady Dior creations before her passing in 2024. Rich in narrative quilting, beading, and painted portraiture, Ringgold’s bags are moving homages to freedom, community, and Black womanhood.

Beijing-based Huang Yuxing closes the chapter with luminous, dream-infused designs that reflect his signature themes of time, memory, and transformation. His painterly Lady Dior bags offer radiant surfaces that suggest the cyclical nature of life.

Together, these eleven artists span continents, generations, and mediums, yet converge in a shared reverence for the Lady Dior as a muse of metamorphosis. Dior Lady Art #9 becomes not merely a design exercise but a mobile gallery of 21st-century artistic consciousness.

For those wishing to explore this singular fusion of luxury and artistic integrity, Dior’s Vancouver boutique at CF Pacific Centre Mall offers a rare opportunity to view select pieces from Lady Art #9 up close. Visitors can engage with Dior’s heritage, experience the craftsmanship behind each piece, and explore options to personalize their own Lady Dior with accessories and custom touches. It’s an invitation to participate in a legacy where timeless design and evolving identity harmonize—one bag, many voices.
