Pierre Coupey: Shaping Canada’s Cultural Landscape Through Art and Language
“Only the imagination is real.”
This enduring line by William Carlos Williams has long been a quiet manifesto for Pierre Coupey, a celebrated Canadian painter, poet, and a key voice in the country’s contemporary cultural landscape. Inside his studio, the act of painting and writing merge into a single language of mark-making—each canvas, like each page, a fragment of an ever-evolving manuscript.
For Coupey, three enduring principles define his creative practice: development by transformation (Stanley William Hayter, Atelier 17), form is never more than an extension of content (Robert Creeley, quoting Charles Olson’s “Projective Verse”), and the medium is the message (Marshall McLuhan). A deep engagement with contemporary poetics and a rigorous reading of Canadian, American, European, and Asian art inform his vision as a painter and printmaker.
Coupey works in clusters—serial bodies of paintings and prints that evolve into pairs, trios, or quartets, each exploring emotional, conceptual, and technical tangents. Sometimes a single canvas is split by a vertical line, forming a fictive diptych that echoes the spread of an open book. Often, the dimensions of his works correspond to the standard letter page, blurring the boundary between manuscript and painting. For Coupey, painting and writing are inseparable acts—a labor of the same hand.
In the studio, discovery is rooted in proprioception—the body’s own intelligence through sensory awareness and movement. Here, it is not reason over passion or passion over reason, but reason with passion. What emerges is not representation of the real, but an enactment of the real through an intimate choreography of language, landscape, and form. “My interest is not in depiction, but in presentation,” Coupey reflects.
Born and raised in Montreal, Coupey earned his BA from McGill University, pursued art studies in Paris, and completed an MA in English and Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. He holds a Certificate in Printmaking from Capilano University. He is the co-founding editor of The Georgia Straight and founding editor of The Capilano Review, where he continues to serve on the board of the Contemporary Arts Society.
His contributions have been widely recognized, including support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council, and the Audain Foundation. He received the Distinguished Artist Award from FANS in 2013 and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2017. Coupey’s poetry, chapbooks, and catalogues have been extensively published, while his paintings and prints have been exhibited across Canada and internationally. His work resides in prominent public collections including the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada Council Art Bank, Simon Fraser University, and the West Vancouver Museum.
Through every page and every brushstroke, Pierre Coupey continues to rewrite the shared manuscript of Canada’s art and language—an open book, waiting for the next line.
