그의 개인전 "I. THEY. MINE. YOURS…"

Vogue World 100에 선정되었고, 뉴욕 리졸리(Rizzoli)를 통해 작품집 『Lyle XOX: Head of Design』을 출간했다.
Sculpting the Face with Discarded Objects: Lyle XOX Breaks the Boundaries of Fantasy and Consumerism
A striking personal exhibition in Vancouver deconstructs gender, beauty, and identity through object-based facial art
What happens when fragments of consumer culture—once used, then discarded—are reassembled into works of art? For Vancouver-based artist Lyle Reimer, known professionally as Lyle XOX, this question is not rhetorical—it is the foundation of his singular visual language. Currently on view at Gallery Jones, his solo exhibition I. THEY. MINE. YOURS… turns the artist’s own face into a vivid, multilayered canvas for commentary on identity, beauty, and waste.
Blending makeup artistry, performance, fashion, and assemblage, Lyle XOX constructs sculptural characters directly on his face using a trove of found objects. Labels, stamps, scraps of fabric, wires, bits of plastic and paper—all things we tend to overlook—are transformed into surreal, theatrical adornments. Each composition takes shape over the course of hundreds of photographs, ultimately culminating in a portrait that is both deeply personal and viscerally symbolic.
The result is a direct challenge to societal assumptions about masculinity, femininity, cultural signifiers, and conventional ideals of beauty. His characters exist beyond binary definitions, asserting themselves with elaborate intricacy and paradoxical humor.
“As soon as the wig cap goes on, that’s when the transformation begins,” says Lyle. “By the end, you’re no longer looking at yourself in the mirror. You’re facing a living sculpture.”
The power of Lyle’s work lies not only in its visual drama but in the way it confronts the viewer. The gaze of his characters is unflinching, meeting the viewer with intense presence—while also confronting them with the ephemera of their own consumer choices. This juxtaposition of surrealist elegance and capitalist detritus forms a bold critique of image-driven society, luxury culture, and environmental responsibility.
Lyle’s background informs his unique practice. Raised in the tiny rural town of Wymark, Saskatchewan (population under 200), he relocated to Vancouver, studied at the Blanche MacDonald Centre for Applied Design, and worked as a senior makeup artist with MAC Cosmetics for over 15 years. His decision to pursue art full-time marked a turning point. “All of this is incredible,” he reflects. “But if you don’t have amazing people to share the joy with, it really doesn’t feel the same.”
His international recognition exploded in 2019. That year, Lyle was named to Vogue World 100—a list of creatives redefining art, fashion, and beauty. He released a monograph titled Lyle XOX: Head of Design (published by Rizzoli, New York), and was invited by Viktor & Rolf and Cirque du Soleil to present his creative process. The same year, CBC produced a feature-length documentary titled Random is my Favourite Colour, and three months later his book won an International Photography Award.
Since then, his work has been featured in major international outlets including Vogue Italia, Artnet, DAZED, L’Officiel, Surface, The New York Times, and many others. Lyle XOX has delivered artist talks in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, Taiwan, and Amsterdam.
He has also collaborated with musician and performance icon FKA Twigs, as well as luxury fashion houses Moschino, Gucci, Comme des Garçons, and Maison Margiela.
“I’ve always lived differently—and I’m more than happy to continue living that way,” he says. “It’s the only way I know how to live.”
