The Art of Water and Color, Kwak Cheol-heung Watercolor Exhibition

Cheolheung Kwak paints watercolors. Among the many materials and techniques of contemporary art, painting is done with watercolors, which are recognized as the most basic materials by the general public. Having dealt with various materials and techniques while majoring in art in college, it is meaningful that watercolor is what he stubbornly uses as his own medium, ignoring everything else.

Watercolor is a picture drawn with paints that can be dissolved in water. If you expand it, ink, oriental paint, gouache, and poster color are watercolors, and acrylic paints are diluted with water and can be called watercolors. However, when we talk about watercolor in general, we talk about transparent watercolor. Transparent watercolor is a painting method that we commonly encountered in school classes, in which paints squeezed on a palette are dissolved in water and painted.

Watercolors themselves are believed to have existed since ancient times, but the beginning of modern watercolors is seen as the Renaissance. In the 16th century, watercolor was mainly used for outdoor sketches, plant and animal miniatures and illustrations. Even today, plant and animal miniatures are mainly drawn in watercolor. It was used not only for painting, but also for coloring reports, illustrations for project descriptions, and blueprints. I think it was because it was easy to color.

Tubular watercolors appeared in the mid-19th century. The industrial revolution and the development of chemistry due to it were a very important turning point in the development of watercolor painting. The problem of lightfastness, which was a disadvantage, was also resolved, and special paper and tools were developed, making it a more attractive field. Watercolor is the art of water and color. The picture changes depending on how you treat the water. This technique, which artists refer to as the taste of water, is a phenomenon in which their unique characteristics are incarnated.

Watercolor is a difficult painting in a way. Since oil painting can be painted over, it can be corrected if it is wrong. However, once a mistake is made in watercolor, it cannot be corrected. It must be completed in an orderly manner according to the plan. Of course, the effect of coincidence is partially utilized, but even that must be skillfully controlled. Therefore, when it comes to watercolors, you need to be able to control everything that can happen in the process of painting in order to get the work you want.

Kwak Cheol-heung skillfully controls the tricky production method of watercolor painting. He shows a high level of technical perfection in watercolor production. The parts of very complex objects such as flowers, textiles, and objects are precisely depicted to make them feel more realistic than they actually are. Some call this realistic technique hyperrealism. Hyperrealism is described as "an art style that excludes subjectivity to the extreme and pursues a realistic composition as stark as a photograph."

However, Kwak Cheol-heung's paintings have a different point from hyper-realism artists. That's just lyricism. Hyper-realism artists exclude extreme emotions and give a dry feeling, but Kwak Cheol-heung creates a very warm and emotional screen. Rather, it is a painting that evokes lyrical emotions.

Because the materials themselves are flowers, utensils, and still objects, they are universal objects that humans have the most affection for. There is no room for other factors to intervene here. Beautiful, lyrical and emotional pictures are bound to come out. It is best for an artist to draw hard and look pretty. Artist Kwak Cheol-heung is the best person for such a picture. He is simple, honest, romantic and pure. He is a person who enjoys playing the guitar and singing, and draws his own pictures while teaching his pupils how to draw.

Considering that the artist's world of art comes from himself, Kwak Cheol-heung's works, which are clean, simple, and faithful to the fundamentals, match the artist's own personality and attitude in life. Rather than change and adventure, it is a true and honest work world in which a stable and principled attitude of life melts. We hope that the life and art of Kwak Cheol-heung, the art of water and color, will be richer and richer.
