특히 이번 전시는 한국문화예술위원회의 '다원예술 창작산실' 지원사업에 선정된 ‘글로컬 openARTs 실험실’ 프로젝트의 일환으로 진행된다. 이는 지역과 세계를 잇는 동시대 예술의 실험적 지평을 넓히고, 장르 간 경계를 허무는 다원적 예술 활동을 지원하기 위해 마련된 장이다.

보이는 형상 너머의 진실, '신체'를 다시 정의하다

사라 클라트의 작업 세계는 인간의 '신체'에서 출발하지만, 결코 외형적인 묘사에 머물지 않는다. 작가는 신체를 단순한 물리적 덩어리가 아닌, 개인의 고유한 성격과 예민한 감각이 집약된 통로로 바라본다.

특히 작가 노트에서 밝힌 바와 같이, 그녀의 작업은 언어로 치환하기 어려운 복잡미묘한 감정들을 시각적 언어로 번역하는 성찰의 과정이다. 이번 전시에서는 회화와 조각이라는 두 가지 매체를 통해 서로 다른 방식으로 감정의 층위를 드러낸다.

전시를 기획한 spaceMERGE? 측은 "관람자가 단순히 눈으로 작품을 보는 것에 그치지 않고, 자신의 감정을 투영해 작품에 참여하길 바란다"고 전했다. 관람객은 전시장에 구현된 친밀하면서도 팽팽한 긴장감이 감도는 공간을 통해, 자신의 신체 또한 기억과 감정에 의해 형성된 하나의 '감각적 표면'임을 경험하게 될 것이다.

BUSAN, South Korea — openARTs spaceMERGE?, a prominent alternative art hub in Busan dedicated to glocal networking, will present States of Form: Between Form and Emotion, a solo exhibition by Polish artist Sara Klatt, starting April 25.

This exhibition is particularly significant as it is part of the "Glocal openARTs Lab" project, which was selected for the prestigious ‘Interdisciplinary Arts Creative San-sil’ support program by the Arts Council Korea (ARKO). The initiative aims to expand the experimental horizons of contemporary art by connecting local and global scenes and dismantling boundaries between different artistic genres.

Redefining the ‘Body’ Beyond Visible Forms
While Sara Klatt’s work begins with the human body, it does not stop at mere physical representation. The artist views the body not as a simple physical mass, but as a conduit where unique character and sensitive perceptions converge.

As noted in her artist statement, Klatt’s work is a process of reflection—translating complex emotions that are difficult to verbalize into a visual language. In this exhibition, she reveals layers of emotion through two distinct mediums: painting and sculpture.

Klatt’s paintings are characterized by organic, floral forms inspired by her observations of others, particularly those close to her. The softly flowing lines and colors visualize the unique temperaments and subtle emotional fluctuations of individuals, delivering a sense of visual serenity alongside a deep internal resonance.

The Border Between Tension and Liberation In her sculptural works, the physical dynamics of power are more pronounced. Klatt focuses on the tension, intimacy, and vulnerability the body experiences when exposed to external stimuli. By controlling or releasing the physical properties of her materials, she explores the psychological boundary between the human desire for control and the need for liberation.

An Encounter of Senses and Sound
The curators at spaceMERGE? expressed their hope that "viewers will not just observe the works with their eyes but participate by projecting their own emotions into them." Visitors will experience their own bodies as "sensory surfaces" formed by memory and emotion within a space that oscillates between intimacy and taut tension.

The opening on April 25 will feature a special performance by musician Hong Seong-ryul. This collaboration between Klatt’s visual messages and Hong’s musical rhythm is expected to enrich the dialogue between "form and emotion."

Sara Klatt, who has established a unique formal language through her work in Europe—including at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Katowice, Poland—brings an exhibition to Korea that offers a profound opportunity to share universal human emotions through art across borders.
